The J. Kennedy Design Jewelry Trunk Show

J. Kennedy Design at ZFolio
Internationally recognized, John Kennedy’s works reflect some of the most progressive and innovative designs in modern jewelry. His Cylettes® Collection utilizes a concept so unique it was awarded two U.S. patents, unprecedented in the jewelry industry. Kennedy’s Cylinders of Color embody gemstones set in gold and platinum that are cut in cylindrical shape to transmit light rather than reflect it. This technique releases the vivid color of the gemstones in ways not found in traditional jewelry. Self-taught, Kennedy has been creating jewelry for over forty years. He originated and introduced new gem setting techniques he calls the ‘aperture’ and ‘capture’ setting. His work can only be found in a handful of galleries around the world, and continues to be in demand by collectors. ZFolio is the only gallery in California where his work is offered.View the entire collection and save 10% during the event.

Sarah Graham Metalsmithing
Solvang: Friday 7/19 & Saturday 7/20 (10 AM to 6 PM)
Monterey: Friday 8/9 & Saturday 8/10 (10 AM to 7 PM)
Monterey: Saturday 10/5 (11 AM to 6 PM)

By incorporating innovative materials with her exceptional design sense, Sarah Graham creates jewelry that is unlike anything else; organic, textural, with a muted palate that is subtly feminine, yet substantial; unique, yet universal in its appeal. The natural inspiration behind the jewelry - whether cast directly from Jacaranda Pods and decayed wood or rendered in wax from a microscopic view of single cell marine organisms - gives her designs a texture and feel that makes them infinitely wearable. But it is the matte black finish of oxidized cobalt chrome juxtaposed with 18k yellow, rose and white gold, set with colored diamonds, that is its' most eye-catching element.

J. Kennedy Design
Monterey: Friday 8/30 & Saturday 8/31 (11 AM to 7 PM)
Solvang: Sunday 9/1 & Monday 9/2 (10 AM to 6 PM)

Created by world-renowned jewelry designer John Kennedy, and introduced to critical acclaim at the 1992 New York Jewelers of America show, Cylettes® are colored gemstones cut into cylindrical shape that transmit light rather than reflect light. Allowing light to directly pass through the stone reveals the natural colors of the gemstone. By transforming both light and stone, Cylettes® create a deeper and smoother presentation of color not found within traditional faceted gemstones. Kennedy’s innovative designs and creative use of metals result in flawless pieces of art that are both fashionable and wearable.

Alex Sepkus
Solvang: Friday 7/19 & Saturday 7/20 (10 AM to 6 PM)
Monterey: Friday 8/9 & Saturday 8/10 (10 AM to 7 PM)

Alex Sepkus makes no sense. Somewhere between P.G. Wodehouse (of whom he is a big fan) and a worn flagstone from a medieval church floor, Alex found timeless beauty. So, perhaps he makes perfect sense. Alex Sepkus is a fanatic; the intelligences he applies to his work is far beyond the national standard requirements of a jeweler set by the committee of national standard requirements. Which leads to the second contradiction about Alex: This obsessive approach would normally suggest an absence of humour. Instead, we see in Alex's work an irresistible playfulness, even a quirkiness, unrivalled in the world of the goldsmith.

Tom Kruskal Designs
Monterey: Friday 6/21 & Saturday 6/22, 2013  (11 AM to 7 PM)
Solvang: Sunday 6/23, 2013  (10 AM to 6 PM)

Tom Kruskal's background is in mathematics, design and music. His career is about elevating hand-forged jewelry from a craft to an art, and balancing artistic honesty with the integrity of a successful small business. His inspirations include organic shapes in the New England countryside, the ocean in its fluid changing forms, and the music and dance that fill his life outside the jewelry studio and remind him of the proportion, balance, movement and grace he strives for in his jewelry designs. Tom Kruskal's design process incorporates a lifelong exploration of linear forms in space, and attention to the interplay of aesthetics and the fabrication process (if it’s too complicated to make, it’s probably not a good design!).

Paul D. Harrie and Jay Bridgland Together
Monterey:
 Saturday 6/8, 2013  (11 AM to 7 PM)

Paul Harrie loves creating objects of art that give the impression of opening up to find mysterious beautiful interiors. His Saturn series is a perfect example; blown glass spheres with layers upon layers of brilliant colors and intriguing textures to pull the viewer in. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of cane and murrini techniques Paul’s work displays a precision and attention to detail rare in studio glass.

Originally from England, Jay Bridgland (who now calls California home) uses the technique of flameworking to redefine the concept of glass artwear. Using classical and traditional glass techniques as a foundation to work from, color, shape and conceptual form play an integral role in Jay's work. Learning the tradition of glass working (which includes annual treks to the Venetian island of Murano, Italy to work with classical Italian glass maestros) coupled with contemporary art glass concepts has kept his work in a fluid and constant evolution. The development of couture glass derives from Jay's concept of art as fashion.
