Paul D. Harrie

My work is influenced by childhood memories of the snow covered landscape and clear icy light of winter in North Dakota. After receiving an MFA from UCLA under the instruction of Richard Marquis, Paul opened his own studio in 1980. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of cane and murrini techniques Paul’s work displays a precision and attention to detail rare in studio glass. Every piece is hand crafted and inspected to ensure the highest quality.

Paul’s glass art is perfect - or it doesn’t see the light of day. Each piece involves classical form, contemporary design and bright clean colors. His art glass is hand blown, cut, and polished. Using the Italian techniques of canework Paul pulls thin rods of colored glass encased in clear glass to a length of ninety to one hundred feet. After cutting the drawn rod into toothpick lengths, he carefully sizes the pieces and weaves patterns together that result in his spiral designs.

In 1981 the Corning Museum of Glass selected Paul’s work for inclusion in its prestigious New Glass Review 2 (only 100 are selected each year from thousands of international entries). He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA, where he studied glassblowing with world-renowned artist Richard Marquis. His teaching experience includes several years as glass instructor at the Long Beach and Northridge campuses of California State University, and two years as assistant glass instructor at UCLA.

Today his work is exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and Canada and has been shown at the Nelson Art Museum in Kansas City and the Royal Art Gallery in Kyoto, Japan. The perfection he strives for captures the untouched quality of fresh snow that he remembers as a child.
